The first time I paid for a newsletter, and why I had no problem forking over my cash

A peddler of information keeps trying to friend me on Facebook and I don’t appreciate it. He has something to sell and he wants me to buy it, but he’s not at all interested in being my friend.

How do I know this? Because not once has he had any form of interaction with me before he had a product to sell.

Don’t get it twisted. We’re not friends.

It is quite possible the marketer I’m referring to noticed we have many mutual writing contacts and thought I’m someone who just gives a big Facebook YES to everyone. I’m not.

Stop waiting for “normal,” because this is it.

Having been cooped up for a few days now, due to a surgery, I’ve been feeling a little sorry for myself. I’m perfectly fine being cooped up when it’s on my own terms. I like introverting. But now that I look and feel like a science project gone wrong, I can’t go out and it’s grating on my nerves.

Late last night I decided to step outside under the cover of darkness, and just breathe. I needed to feel the cool air that all the free people have been enjoying. …

Because the people are there for a purpose, not for an algorithm

In my ongoing quest toward entrepreneurship, some days I just sit here and stare at my computer not knowing which direction to go in first.

Social media intensifies the feeling of aimlessness because as soon as you hop on one platform or another it becomes an instant distraction. You go check this or that notification and you’re immediately derailed by all the pretty pictures and newsworthy things.

It’s incredible how much time I can sit here and scroll. Then it’s 4:30 and the point at which I can do anything useful with my day has passed.

Ironically, it was inside…

They’re killing it so why couldn’t we?

This was originally written in the newsletter I published yesterday but I feel like it needs to reach a wider audience because we’re all searching for something, even if we don’t know what it is yet.

As I have been newly inducted into the unemployment hall of fame, I’ve been doing a lot of online research and learning. Quite frankly, I’m really surprised at how some people are earning a living out there.

Did you know you can take a course to learn how to become a pet influencer?? …

A tribute to every mother who has lost her title as “Mom”

If university for future moms was a thing, I probably couldn’t have afforded to enroll. However, I was fortunate enough to skip the education part and get the job straight out of high school.

Motherhood doesn’t start out as a high-paying career but once you’re thrust into it, it provides unlimited opportunity to learn as you go. Payment for motherhood is like Bitcoin — it exists but it’s not tangible. We can’t see it but we know it’s there.

You don’t need to apply for promotions in this career because they just come as they please and BAM…you’re suddenly doing…

A single comment is performing better than some entire stories

Photo by Anthony DELANOIX on Unsplash

Have you ever received an email from Medium informing you that one of your comments currently has fifty fans?

I just did.

This single comment is performing better than a good percentage of actual stories I’ve written and it kind of makes me smile. I wonder why people like the comment so much?

Maybe because it’s a cute account about the kindness of others.

I had left the comment on a story written by Tracey Folly. I’ll drop her story link here since she thinks she has no real friends. Go be her friend!

That story reminded me of a…

Until I wished I’d had it

I’m a casual member of a Facebook group for parents who have lost their children. We are an emotional and easily triggered bunch, to say the least.

Not long ago, a mother posted a question to the group, asking whether others knew if her child’s life insurance would payout based on his cause of death. The cause was an accidental drug overdose.

The mother asked the group at large because that’s how all of our children died and surely of the 10,000+ group members, many parents would be able to advise her.

I read every single answer in the thread…

Life has a way of kicking us in the pants to make us move

I have only lost a job twice in my life. The first time was completely absurd and the second time? Absolutely forgivable.

Last week, I was permanently let go after a four-month layoff, and to be honest, I can’t blame them one bit. No business knows how to function properly during Covid.

After our second workplace shutdown and third city lockdown within a year, the powers that be needed to make some tough decisions. Keeping a full staff in limbo on a perpetual layoff is not sustainable.

So, they terminated several of us.

I don’t know how they decided who…

I’m still a skeptic but she was worth every penny

I feel like most people don’t resort to seeing a psychic unless they’re desperate. No one seeks out someone who communicates with dead people until we have lost someone who meant the world to us.

At that point we’re just trying to cling to any shred of hope or evidence that our lost loved ones are okay.

If you’ve read anything I’ve written in the last little while you’ll know I believe in angels and the afterlife.

But psychics, mediums, and clairvoyants?

I’m not so quick to be convinced that a stranger who doesn’t know me from a hole in…

It depends what you want to know about where you’re going

A travel agent’s first job is to sell. While many of them are passionate about travel in a general sense, they are in business to sell you a vacation and get paid.

Some are so passionate about certain locations that they call themselves ‘destination specialists’ but their expertise rarely goes beyond what is bookable within a travel agent booking portal.

Many moons ago I thought it would be cool to get certified as a travel agent because I was already ‘selling’ a particular destination to anyone who would listen.

But I wasn’t making money on my expertise at that time…
